Chapter Six
Jett woke early with a splitting headache. Billy looked peaceful, so he let him sleep a little longer and staggered to the bathroom to take a shower. It helped marginally, and by the time he climbed out and wrapped a towel around his waist, he felt almost ready to face the world.
First order of the day was calling down to the concierge to see about getting a new cell phone to replace the one hed left at Feeses. Second was to sit down in front of the giant TV in the living room and fire up the news. He thought for sure CNN would have found something better to report on by now, and at first it looked like they had…until he realized there was a little box on screen keeping running tabs on the latest Goldie news.
That was dipping his toes in. After a few minutes of that and a shot of scotch to wake him up, he switched over to E! and was confronted immediately with the pretty, if prematurely lined, face of one of his long-term groupies. He couldnt remember her name at first, but the news—if it could be called that—helpfully supplied it at the bottom of the screen.
“Yeah, Jetts an abusive asshole,” she was saying with tears in her eyes. “Hes aggressive. He got anger problems. Few years ago, he had court-order anger management, but it didnt do shit. Jett beat us, forced hisself on us…”
Sobs like hed never heard came out of that lying bitch, and Jett could only watch in furious horror. After a few more lies, they cut to another woman—this one unfamiliar to him—and she was crying too, and all too ready to tell the camera how Jett had threatened her with physical violence if she didnt go along with his filthy and depraved wishes. Half of what she said had to be bleeped out even on cable, and she went into detail sufficient to remind Jett that he actually did know her.
Lurching to his feet, he stumbled back to the bathroom and puked into the toilet, dry heaving once the scotch hed drunk was out, and cussing the world. Hed left the doors open, and he could still hear the TV faintly, but now Goldies ex-manager was enlightening the nation about Goldies descent into drug abuse at Jetts hands. Wiping his chin clean with the back of one hand, Jett walked into the bedroom and gave Billy a little shake.
“Its only, like, eight a.m., and its the apocalypse. Stop me before I do something rash, man.”
Once Goldie rolled over and Jett saw the tears in his eyes, he realized the pop star had heard the whole thing. There was no accusation in his eyes, just pain. That hurt Jett more than anything else hed seen that morning. The one thing in the world he never wanted to do was hurt Billy.
Before Jett could apologize, Billy pulled Jett on top of him and sobbed. It felt good to be held, but Jett couldnt shake the anxiety he felt that he was the reason Billy was crying.
